The system is built to watch the shelf, not the shopper. It can tell that a bottle of water left a row. It cannot tell who picked it up. The only record of a visit is the item taken and the payment for it.

That distinction matters under Canadian privacy law. PIPEDA, the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act enforced by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, treats biometric data such as a faceprint as especially sensitive.
